Improv, Color and Curves Kim Smith Soper/Leland Ave Studios

This week I finished up a fun little project that involved some of my favorite things: lots of color, lots of improv, and a technique I’m still working on, curves.

There’s not much to say about this one, except that it was so much fun to make! The end result is imperfect — there are a few puckers at the seams, but overall I really like the end result.

I tried a new method of quilting on this one, too: NO GUIDES! I didn’t even start with a single line to guide my walking foot. I just went for it. And let me tell you, it was HARD. I am a straight-line quilter through and through, and to let the foot wander made me twitch. But in the end, I really think the quilting complements the style of this little mini in just the right ways, imperfections and all.

The finished size is 27″ x 29″ which is just right for adding some color to my walls for summer!

What new things are you working on lately? Have you pushed your comfort zone with some new techniques or color combos? I’d love to hear!

I like that you quilted without guides to compliment the piecing! I personally love improv but dislike the mess I make when piecing, and I just wrapped up a bit of improv myself.

It’s so true, Yvonne! I love the process, but hate the cleanup!

I really love this one! And the quilting – absolutely perfect for it in its own imperfect way!
